FMS: Fibromyalgia Syndrome
Fibromyalgia Syndrome falls under the category of a somatoform
disorder. This means that, although the individual suffers from
physical symptoms there are no medical explanations. When the
term syndrome is used it is a measure of our ignorance because
it means we don't know what it is or how it is caused. The term
merely means a specific set of signs and symptoms that occur together.
There is no test for fibromyalgia that will indicate a particular
problem. Tests are only used to rule out other conditions. Therefore
although the pain a sufferer of FMS has to contend with is very
real indeed - there are no actual physical causes.
We all suffer from stress and anxiety in our lives and we all
deal with it differently. If we do not deal with it successfully
it will manifest in the body sooner or later. The way that this
stress related syndrome manifests is with certain tender points
that present in all four quadrants of the body. The medical profession
have decided that if you have suffered this pain continuously
for at least three months, have it in at least 3 quadrants and
are tender in at least 11 out of 18 tender points they will call
it FMS. Which means if you have it for only two and a half months
or only in 10 tender points it doesn't exist, in their definition.
Although some criteria must be set in order to attach a label
to a condition the drawback is that the sufferer now has further
justification for their psychosomatic condition.
Another factor that perpetuates this painful condition is that
sufferers invariably join a support group. This is a wonderful
idea if it were used to inspire each other to use their God given
power of the mind to turn any negative patterns around. Unfortunately
unless it is run by an inspired leader with a positive outlook
on life it can degenerate into a 'pity party' which then only
serves to reinforce all the negatives surrounding this terrible
condition. To commiserate with others will only make matters worse.
Often these support groups become targets for the pharmaceutical
companies to sell their wares to a desperate and captive audience.
The promise of a new miracle drug gives nothing more than false
hope to hapless individuals who want nothing more than a good
nights sleep.
As with any anxiety-based ailment, fatigue and insomnia set in
and compound the problem. The problem is further exacerbated when
the brain reads the pain as a danger signal and mobilizes its
defences. It gets ready to fight or flight. As there is no recognizable
enemy these defences are not used, resulting in the body remaining
in a hyper tense state. This makes the sufferer hypersensitive
to smells, sounds, lights, and vibrations. The keyed up body begins
to experience the slightest touch or sound as painful thus perpetuating
this vicious cycle.
The lack of sleep that this syndrome creates, deigns the body
the deep refreshing sleep it so desperately needs. It remains
on high alert, which creates the alpha-delta sleep anomaly. Due
to the hypertension, which produces the alert 'Beta' wave, the
sufferer is jolted out of the restorative 'Delta' state before
any significant healing can occur. When racked with tension, the
body desperately needs the deep restorative powers of the delta
state to relieve the stress and pacify the neurotransmitters.
The solution is simple if you can learn to enter the deep refreshing
'Alpha' state naturally. This will pave the way to a good nights
sleep where the healing powers of the 'Delta' state can be enjoyed.
It is also important to correct the misperceptions that originally
caused the vicious cycle to commence. This can be done at the
same time while you enjoy the 'Alpha' state.
There are two main drawbacks to healing this condition. Firstly,
most sufferers have become dependant on medication and need to
go through detoxification to facilitate the reaching of the 'Alpha'
and 'Theta' states. Secondly, and this is the biggest hindrance,
sufferers have energised their problem to such an extent they
believe they cannot be free of it. It now has an official label
and they have been told that there is no cure. All they can hope
for is some miracle drug in the future to relieve the symptoms.
They believe the problem is real and they are powerless to do
anything.
It is no wonder that sufferers become very angry if you suggest
it is 'all in the mind.' This is understandable because
their pain has been all consuming and become a part of their lives.
It is therefore imperative before any healing can occur that the
sufferer, pause, step back and simply entertain the fact that
maybe it is due to hypertension which can be relieved if they
relax and let go. Maybe then the body will gravitate back to normal
functioning and the pain will disappear. Maybe it is also possible
to tell the body that all is well and it can stand down from high
alert.
The way the MindFrame Technique works is to allow the sufferer
to reach a deep level of relaxation. This generates the much-needed
Theta and Delta brainwaves that have being lacking through lack
of sleep and fatigue. The body can now harmonize and regenerate
itself pacifying the neurotransmitters that have been sending
unnecessary pain signals to the brain. The next step is to identify
the misperception which caused the body to prepare to 'fight or
flight' in the first place and turn it around. This is very simply
done with the five steps that you will learn in the MindFrame
Technique. |
