Meet world thinkers at mind festival

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians can get up close with world thinkers at the inaugural Malaysia Festival of the Mind next month. 

The festival, organised by the Malaysian Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM), will feature talks by, among others, Terry Winchester, a qualified hypno-therapist and psychotherapist from Johannesburg; Prof Dr Leonard Yong, an international consultant who gained recognition for his research and consultancy work on creativity and emotional intelligence; and Alex Ow, the first independent Edward de Bono consultant in Malaysia. 

Other speakers include Anant Kasibhatla, the Indian national record holder for memory, and Joey Yap, feng shui master instructor. 

The speakers will talk about how to develop brainpower and thinking techniques, among other things. 

“Awareness has grown among Malaysians that we can do so much to improve our minds. We organised this festival for Malaysians to see and experience how to further stimulate their minds,” MMLM chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik told reporters during a press conference.

Dr Ling, who is also Utar council chairman, said the talks would be limited to about 200 people, based on a first-come-first-served basis. 

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is MMLM patron, will launch the four-day festival on Oct 25. 

The event will also include demonstrations, exhibitions and competitions to create awareness relating to training the brain and enhancing mental literacy. 

Dr Ling also announced winners of the memory and mind-mapping competitions held in conjunction with the festival at Utar on Sept 8. 

Mental development trainer Yip Siow Hong, 20, emerged as the overall champion for the four categories – random words, numbers, dates and events, and alphabets – of the memory competition.  

Yip was also the winner of the random alphabets category. 

The winners for the random words, numbers and dates and events categories were Nurlina Suraiya Md Sharif, 16, from SMK Seri Gombak; Mar Poh Yien, 21, an auditor at Price Waterhouse Coopers, from Ipoh; and Mar Thien Ho, 17, from Ipoh, respectively. 

The winner for the mind-mapping competition was Natalie Teh Siew Po, 17, from SMK Assunta. 

On Oct 6, there will be a talk by Dr Yong on “Developing Openness to New Ideas for Enhancing Creative Thinking”, from 9.45am to noon, at the Auditorium Centre for Extension Education, Utar, PJ.
